Dr. Burton’s research is multidimensional with a focus on the acquisition of music using a language acquisition theoretical framework. She studies the recurrent process of music literacy and how children make meaning of the music they read and subsequently write. Burton also conducts research on the preparation of music teachers within authentic contexts and school university partnerships. Other emphases of study are educational policy, and the professional development of inservice teachers who participate in pedagogical study groups. Some of her work may be found in the book Learning from Young Children: Research in Early Childhood Music, and journals: Research Studies in Music Education, the Journal of Music Teacher Education, and Arts Education Policy Review .
